New York CNN —Meta’s AI image generator is coming under fire for its apparent struggles to create images of couples or friends from different racial backgrounds. The same thing happened when prompted by CNN to create an image of an Asian woman with a White husband. This screen grab of an Imagine with Meta AI prompt shows an AI-generated image. Catherine Thorbecke/CNN via Imagine with Meta AIMeta released its AI image generator in December. I mean, I didn't really care about what I was wearing, and my brothers and I were fine with driving our dad's old '98 Lincoln. We didn't really talk about moneyThere were some indications that we were rich. Our family took really nice vacations, but as a kid, there was a disconnect between things and how much they cost. For both my mom and my dad, having a lot of money was a relatively new experience, as was raising children. I don't really see it as dishonest, though, because people are multifaceted and much more complex than the sum of where they grew up.

Google's Gemini flop looks bad from the outside. Ask the folks who worked on Apple Maps. Apple Maps fiasco could point the way forwardBut let's be more positive this time around, with a different echo from the Big Tech Screwups file: Remember Apple Maps? And then, over time, Apple did get its act together, and people did start using Apple Maps, and now there are plenty of normal people who use Apple Maps as a default, and some of them even argue that it's better than Google Maps. Except: The time between Apple Maps' flop and that article I linked to above — headline: "People Have Begun to Love Apple's Most Hated Product" — was more than a decade.

Opinion: Mitch McConnell’s unconditional surrender

CNN —Mitch McConnell has bowed to political reality and announced that he is relinquishing his role as leader of Senate Republicans. (Chao served as transportation secretary under former President Donald Trump, before quitting the post following the January 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol.) The anti-Trump coalition within the Republican Party is small and hanging on by a thread, and there is little chance of that changing in the short term. Now, one of Haley’s most generous benefactors, the conservative political action committee Americans for Prosperity, funded by the Koch network, has withdrawn its funds. And now, like other Trump opponents, Romney finds himself heading for the exit at the end of his current term.

The search giant announced a major upgrade to its AI model Gemini. Google under fireGoogle's big problem came after Gemini users started to report problems this week with its image-generation feature. For Google, the moment is one that casts a shadow over real advances it has made in AI to keep it neck-and-neck with competitors. In part, it's because the Gemini image generation blunder really is as bad as people say. Google CEO Sundar Pichai has previously said he feels "very comfortable" about where the company is with its AI mission.

Google says it will fix Gemini, its answer to OpenAI's GPT-4, after people complained the multi-modal AI model's image-generating feature was "woke." On Thursday, the company said in a statement sent to Business Insider that it was pausing Gemini from generating AI images of people while it makes the changes. AdvertisementNew game: Try to get Google Gemini to make an image of a Caucasian male. It’s first worth noting which countries have most dramatically increased their defense spending since the invasion of Ukraine. Yves Herman/ReutersTrump’s well-documented comments about NATO and European defense spending woke them up from that slumber. The example many point to is a deal struck earlier this year between multiple European countries to buy 1,000 Patriot missiles. “Pensions for soldiers are useful, sure, but they are not going to shoot a Russian,” a European security official told CNN. But it will be worth it, if countries don’t get bored and work together.

A record win for Arsenal. After Arsenal hammered West Ham 6-0 for its biggest ever Premier League away victory, United beat Aston Villa 2-1 in a huge result in the race for Champions League qualification. Bukayo Saka scored twice and Declan Rice — a former West Ham favorite — added the sixth goal almost apologetically. Rasmus Hojlund opened the scoring for United and has now netted in five straight league matches. Signed in July for 105 million pounds (then $138 million), it is looking like money well spent by Arsenal.

Even in a campaign in which Mr. Trump’s dominance has sapped the race of much of its drama, his win in Nevada felt particularly preordained. Embarrassingly for Ms. Haley, she was heavily outvoted in that election by a “None of These Candidates” option on the ballot. She was essentially unopposed, but even without Mr. Trump on the ballot, Republican voters rejected her. Ms. Haley still won the contest, but its results were effectively immaterial. Mr. McDonald also repeatedly pushed false claims of voter fraud that remain at the heart of Mr. Trump’s lie that the 2020 election was stolen from him.

New York CNN —There is a dangerous undercurrent dragging Americans who wade into the political waters out toward the extreme. But much of the national press, basking ashore on the sun-soaked beach, refuses to acknowledge it in a serious manner. Instead, many journalists have grown comfortable glossing over the treacherous rip tide lurking beneath the surface of the water before their very eyes. Embarrassingly, Ron DeSantis has done more in recent days than most in the press to call attention to the matter. For one, it is still perhaps uncomfortable to acknowledge the depths of dishonesty in which much of right-wing media now operates.

I started investing for the first time at age 32 without a ton of knowledge or a specific plan. That's why I decided to sit down with financial planner Kelly Klingaman to find out just how messy my investment portfolio really is and what I can do about it. Investing 15-20% of my portfolio in cryptocurrencyIt wasn't until I sat down to audit my financial portfolio that I realized how big a share of my investments are in cryptocurrencies. I shared with Klingaman that I have a habit of investing too little money in too many individual stocks. Doing so will hold me accountable every month with a minimum amount of money I want to add to my investment portfolio.

Tagovailoa finished 21 of 30 for 243 yards with the TD to Hill and the two INTs. Hill's touchdown catch was his 10th of the season, making him the first Dolphins player since Mike Wallace in 2014 to have double-digit TD receptions. Reed intercepted Tagovailoa on the Dolphins' next possession, giving the Jets the ball at their 49 with 2 seconds left. Mostert's 13-yard touchdown run on the first play of the fourth quarter gave the Dolphins a 27-6 lead — and tempers flared after that. STATSHill finished with nine catches for 102 yards and the TD, while Jaylen Waddle caught eight passes for 114 yards.

CNN —Disney has a mess on its hands to marvel at. The embarrassingly weak debut marked the worst opening for any Marvel Studios film in its history. But, in recent years, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has started to show serious signs of trouble. Those films — all of which were released after “Endgame” — are the four worst-reviewed films in Marvel history, according to Rotten Tomatoes averages. And the movies failed to earn an A-rating from CinemaScore, a feat almost all Marvel films easily accomplished, signaling deeper troubles with audience reception and crushing word-of-mouth.

Win Mcnamee | ReutersForecasters have been really wrong on the economy recently, but it's nothing new: They've always been wrong. — that the economic forecasts of the major Wall Street banks had been "100 percent dead wrong" in the last 18 months. It's true that Covid and the Russian invasion of Ukraine threw off forecasts, but that's beside the point: Wrong forecasts are the norm, not the exception. The Federal Reserve's own research staff studied the Federal Reserve's economic forecasts from 1997 to 2008 and found that the Fed's predictions for economic activity one year out were no better than average benchmark predictions. The Times story notes other factors that threw off recent economic forecasts: the Russian invasion of Ukraine: being too pessimistic on growth prospects, lack of good data on real-time consumer savings.

If you're speaking with John McWhorter, never use this common phrase: "It is what it is." "The first time someone said that to me was when something unpleasant had happened to me, and he didn't care. "And I parsed it and I thought, 'What a gorgeously chilly way of saying: Your problems don't matter to me.'" But it can come across as so passive that using it can erode other people's trust in you, as McWhorter noted. It's not entirely bad news for McWhorter's least-favorite phrase: Using it can be a sign of emotional resilience, because it shows your ability to accept your circumstances, psychologist Cortney Warren told Make It last month.

Some Amazon employees are upset about the company's new RTO mandate. Amazon is famous for using data to make decisions — except when it's forcing employees back to the office. Hopkins's comments have added to rising frustration among some Amazon employees over the company's return-to-office mandate. Following Hopkins's meeting, Amazon employees took to internal Slack channels to vent their concerns. Mercilessly attacked by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party’s cheerleaders and other Hindu nationalists on Twitter, Ms. Siddiqui was accused of being a biased Pakistani Islamist hatemonger with an anti-India agenda. Eventually the White House had to step up and condemn the harassment as “antithetical to the very principles of democracy.” It felt as if everything that the White House had sought to gloss over had become embarrassingly manifest. The same cannot be said of the State Department and the White House. They would have known plenty about the man for whom they were rolling out the red carpet. DeSantis is scheduled to visit Iowa on Friday, his third trip to the state since declaring his presidential bid. His wife, Casey DeSantis, last week traveled to Iowa to launch a national "Mamas for DeSantis" campaign focused on parental rights, hoping to win over the swing vote of suburban Republican women. DeSantis' supporters are also emphasizing what they see as the similarities between DeSantis and Kim Reynolds, Iowa's popular Republican governor, said one person close to the campaign. "The campaign has the most sophisticated and experienced team ever in Iowa, and is poised to crush DeSantis," Trump spokesperson Steven Cheung said. A dearth of reliable polling in Iowa makes it difficult to assess the real strength of both DeSantis and Trump in the state.
